Washburn Gravel Routes
ROUTE DESCRIPTIONS
Starting Point: FR 252 and Cty Hwy C
W1 – (10:28 Route) – 10 miles out and back. An easy to moderate low traffic route. Wooded, scenic ride over rolling hills through the National Forest with access to several lakes for picnicking and swimming.
FR 252 and FR 251 are graveled; the remainder of the route is on sandy forest roads. There are many ATV, snowmobile, and horse trails crossing along this route, so it is important to pay attention to your location.
W2 – (10:28 Route) – 28 miles. Continuation of 10-mile route. Most of the roads beyond FR 251 are sandy with rolling hills; fat tire bikes are recommended.
Both routes: Enjoy a stop for a picnic or swim at one of the lakes along the way: Twin Lakes and Birch Grove Campground are east of FR 252 on FR 435; Long Lake Picnic Area is east of the route on FR 251; Horseshoe Lake is along the route on FR 427.
Starting Point: Intersection of FR242 and FR236
W3 – (Fire on the Mountain Route) – 24.5 miles. Moderate to Difficult. Scenic ride over rolling hills through the Moquah Barrens. Fat tire bike is recommended as the majority of the route is on sandy roads with the exception of paved FR236.
There are many ATV, snowmobile, and horse trails crossing along this route, so it is important to pay attention to your location.
The ride will provide awesome views of the Moquah Barrens ecosystem. Vast openings give riders opportunities to see a variety of wildlife, wildflowers and pick wild blueberries.
Check out Pine Lake along the route off FR248 via road 1337 and Horseshoe Lake along the route on FR 427.
Starting Point: FR 443 at the intersection with County Hwy C
W4 – (Morning Dew Route) – 7.5 miles. Easy, wooded, scenic ride through the National Forest. Fat tire bikes recommended as this route can be quite sandy. Route can be ridden in either direction and is great for beginner fat tire bikers.
When you’re done with your ride, swing into Washburn to the South Shore Taphouse or up to Bayfield to the Adventure Club Brewing.
