TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS

Hatchery Creek Park Trailhead

Directions: From the intersection of Highways 77 and 63 in Hayward, drive east 3 miles to Fish Hatchery Road. Turn left (north) and go 1 mile to the lower parking lot at the Log Cabin Warming Hut. The Trail Head will be to the right 100 yards.

Hatchery Creek Trail

Distance: 8.9 miles with 1, 2 4 6 and 7 mile cut-offs

Difficulty: Intermediate

Trail Type: 100% single track

Description: Rolling single track moderately technical through glaciated terrain. Not a beginner's trail, but a thoroughly enjoyable singletrack romp. Also accessible via Mosquito Brook Trailhead.


Mosquito Brook Trailhead

Directions: From Hayward - 2.9 miles north on Hwy 63 to Phipps Rd (near KOA campground). Turn right (east) 2.1 miles on Phipps Firelane through Phipps to Mosquito Brook Road. Turn right (south) and go .8 mile to the parking lot at the Birkebeiner Trail crossing.

Trails: Bar Stool Trail, Birkie Trail, Makwa Trail, Phipps Firelane, Plantation Trail, Sugarbush Trail, Trail Descente, Whitetail Trail

Birkie Trail

Distance: 9 miles point-to-point, Mosquito Brook to OO

Difficulty: Intermediate

Trail Type:Wide grass ski trail with single track tread

Description: World famous ski trail, 30 feet wide with worn in single track. Use other routes when wet.

Makwa Trail

Distance: 12.5 miles point to point to OO, 5 miles to Gravel Pit Trailhead.

Difficulty: Intermediate

Trail Type: 100% single track

Description: Twisting, climbing, moderate technical challenge, super-flowy trail. A CAMBA favorite.

Phipps Firelane

Distance: 7.7 miles one-way

Difficulty: Easy/Beginner

Trail Type: Dirt road, fast rolling hills

Description: Forest lined dirt road that parallels the Birkie Trail. Access to all Hayward Cluster trails. Some sections hard and rocky - a fast and fun ride. Watch for occasional vehicles. Good early season choice when other trails are wet.

Plantation Trail

Distance: 2.2 miles one way.

Difficulty: Easy/Beginner

Trail Type: 60% two track, 40% dirt road

Description: Rolling fun ride through hardwoods and big pines. Good choice when wet (access via Phipps Firelane).

Sugarbush Trail

Distance: 1.75 miles point-to-point

Difficulty: Difficult

Trail Type: 100% single track

Description: Challenging technical singletrack connecting Makwa to Whitetail Trails. Access a tH-18 north of Hatchery Creek Trailhead.

Some segments closed or no longer available.

Trail Descente

Distance: 3.3 miles trail only, Loop from H-5

Difficulty: Easy

Trail Type: 50% two track, 50% dirt road

Description: Firelanes, two-tracks and Birkie Trail.

Whitetail Trail

Distance: 4.3 miles loop from trailhead

Difficulty: Easy

Trail Type: 45% Birkie Trail, 10% two track, 45% old forest roads shared with ATVs

Description: Rolling terrain through dense forest on Birkie Trail, logging roads, and firelane.  Connects to all other trails in the Hayward Cluster.


Gravel Pit Trailhead

Directions: From the intersection of Hwy 77 & 63 in Hayward, drive east 9.5 miles to Gravel Pit (Mosquito Brook Flowage) Rd. Turn left/northwest and go 1.7 miles to trailhead parking near the Birkie Trail crossing 

Trails: Bar Stool Trail, Birkie Trail, Makwa Trail, Plantation Trail, Trail Descente

Makwa Trail (North to OO)

Distance: 7.2 miles point to point

Difficulty: Intermediate

Trail Type: 100% single track

Description: Twisting, climbing, moderate technical challenge, super-flowy trail. A CAMBA favorite.

Makwa Trail (South to Mosquito Brook)

Distance: 5 miles point to point

Difficulty: Intermediate

Trail Type: 100% single track

Description: Twisting, climbing, moderate technical challenge, super-flowy trail. A CAMBA favorite.
