eBikes on the CAMBA Trails
The subject has come up a few times recently: what is the status of eBikes on the CAMBA trails? If you haven’t heard of eBikes, they are mountain bikes and other styles of touring bikes with an electric assist motor. There is a fair amount of discussion and even controversy about the integration of eBikes with standard trail use.
CAMBA has discussed the matter and arrived at the conclusion that eBikes are not a good fit for the CAMBA singletrack trails. First and foremost there is the simple fact that these bikes are considered motorized vehicles by most land management agencies and therefore not allowed on the singletrack trails. They are permitted, however, on gravel roads and other routes where they could be a lot of fun.
There are other concerns about eBikes on the singletrack trails, including the ease at which riders can gain speed and then need to skid to slow up for turns and subsequently accelerate out of turns, both of which would have potential impacts on the trail surface.
So the short answer is: eBikes are not permitted on the CAMBA singletrack trails.
